This 4-hour introductory course provides a practical, focused overview of the legal duties and key functions of Health and Safety Representatives (HSRs) in Ontario workplaces with 6–19 workers. This virtual session equips participants with foundational knowledge of their responsibilities, basic hazard recognition, and how to support workplace safety through inspections and effective communication.
Designed for small business owners, clinic leads, and newly appointed HSRs, the session emphasizes practical tools and real-life scenarios applicable to healthcare, community, and service-based workplaces.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
1. Describe the purpose and role of an HSR under Ontario’s Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), including legal rights and responsibilities of all workplace parties.
2. Identify common workplace hazards and understand the basics of the R–A–C–E process (Recognize, Assess, Control, Evaluate) for hazard management.
3. Explain the HSR’s inspection duties, including how to conduct a workplace inspection and what to look for.
4. Outline steps to report concerns and participate in issue resolution, including when to escalate to the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development (MLITSD).
5. Access key health and safety resources, including guidance documents, templates, and government support.
