Training and Retaining:
the challenge to find and keep the right people!
Hiring is challenging within the current labour market as it’s an employee market given the number of available jobs, opportunities, and remote work available for candidates. With these challenges employers should still be focused on getting the right people on the bus (Collins, 2001). Regardless, if it means waiting an additional few weeks or months to hire the correct person it will be worth it in the long run. You don’t want to hire the wrong person just because it’s a quick fix as it will end up costing the company more money and negatively impacts employee morale. As well this could result in spending excess time managing the person.
A School of Human Resource Management (SHRM) study found that 51% of firms struggle to find enough qualified applicants. If you are finding it challenging to find the right people, first realize you are not alone. Many organizations are facing this challenge. Here are some recommendations if you are having this challenge:
- Make sure you are posting your role on various platforms such as, LinkedIn, Indeed, your career page, etc.
- Create social postings/graphics about the role for all your social platforms
- Have your employees share with their networks
- Consider implementing an internal and external referral program
- Promote the mission, vision, and values of the company
- Have a clear and accurate job description
Once you find the right people for your company you need to make sure they feel they are supported with the correct training. This starts with a strong onboarding program so that your new employees have the correct tools, access, and supports to be successful and feel they have made the right choice to join your company. At IPAC Consulting one of the ways we make sure our staff are supported is through our eLearning modules. eLearning modules play a key part in onboarding staff and algins with hybrid and remote roles which are common and preferred in the current market. Our modules provide our staff with learning that covers the theoretical and practical side to ensure they have the knowledge to provide the best services to our clients. eLearning plays a significant role in training employees these days and is a key component for learning and development strategies.
Some benefits of eLearning include the following:
- It can help staff with retention of the material
- In the IPAC world things are constantly changing and courses are easy to update when guidelines change
- You can choose where and when to access and participate in eLearning
- Each person can learn at their own pace
- In the long run it decreases costs
- It algins with the work from home culture
Lastly, eLearning can also be a tool/offering to retain your staff, for example at IPAC Consulting we have eLearning prep courses for IPAC exams including the AIPC, CIC, and LTC CIP certification. Using eLearning for employees to advance in their careers is a great offering to consider as incentives, perks, and overall compensation strategy at your organization.
