Top 5 Reasons to get Certified
So, what’s the big deal? Why should I get certified? It’s a lot of work to study and write an exam, I think I’m doing a fine job as it is.
1. LTC -CIP Certification sets you apart
Getting LTC-CIP certified gives you your street creds! When you can say “I’m a board-certified Infection Control Practitioner” (IPAC Lead) it makes people look up when you talk. It sets you apart from self-proclaimed experts and experts. Within the industry itself, IPAC Leads know the work it takes to get certified and it’s the minimum standard!
2. Standardizes the level of knowledge
LTC-CIP certification standardizes the level of knowledge within the field of Infection Control. As an employer when you hire a certified IPAC Lead, there is a fundamental base knowledge that you know is inherent. Surveillance, outbreak management, risk analysis, educational programs, employee health, etc., all these topics are well understood by your IPAC Lead. Too many times, as an Infection Control Consultant, have we come onsite to realize the IPAC Lead does not understand the term “surveillance” or other well-established concepts in the IPAC world. When the basic level of knowledge is not there, it’s near impossible to ensure the organization is getting adequate ROI on the position.
3. Ensures knowledge is current and relevant
LTC-CIP certification is required for re-certification every 5 years, this is to ensure that knowledge is current and relevant. This can be done through re-writing the exam which would require significant studying…..again! It can also be achieved through continuing education credits which ensures the IPAC Lead is taking courses throughout the 5 year gap between certifications.
4. Onsite Expertise to keeping your facility safe
As an IPAC expert the most important reason to get certified is to ensure you have the knowledge to keep your organization safe. It’s not just the residents, although they are the primary goal, it’s also the families that are part of their care and the staffs that are part of the primary care.
Facilities and organizations need to have IPAC Leads possess critical thinking and problem-solving skills. It is rare, in our experience, that any one situation is textbook perfect, that allows individuals to read a guideline and apply the criteria perfectly as a solution. IPAC Leads need to be able draw upon knowledge and experience to assess the risk based and determine a pathway to mitigate that risk.
5. Internationally Recognized
The LTC-CIP is not a cereal box certification. It is internationally recognized within the field of infection control. If you were to go to the States, to Europe, the same certification would be held by those working in the senior living field. The certification was developed and vetted by experts in infection control worldwide.
Getting prepared for the exam, can be a scary undertaking and a daunting task, especially if you are working full time. IPAC Consulting has developed a preparatory course, specifically to the LTC-CIP certification. The course provides course-based resources, readings, case studies and tests to test your knowledge. Enroll in our program to be included in webinars and group chats with others who are preparing for the LTC-CIP.
