Which COVID-19 test do I need to travel?
March break is quickly approaching, and with vacation planning in full swing, it can very quickly feel overwhelming when looking at what testing is necessary. There are so many changes happening in real-time when it comes to what is/is not required when it comes to travelling to the US and Internationally.
We wanted to take the time to help put your mind at ease and provide a framework so that you can travel with peace of mind. Here are some steps that you can take, to make sure you don’t get stuck while travelling:
1. CHECK THE AREA YOU ARE TRAVELLING TO
Circumstances can change from the time you book your flight, to the time of departure. You can reference this chart for any restrictions/recommendations provided by the CDC: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/map-and-travel-notices.html
2. CHECK YOUR AIRLINE FOR RESTRICTIONS
If you are travelling via air, each airline might have their own specific requirements, so please be sure to check your airline prior to departure. Wearing a mask is required in all international airports currently.
3. PROVIDE PROOF OF VACCINATION
As of right now, it is mandatory to provide proof of vaccination in order to travel internationally. We recommend going through the process of getting your QR code instead of just showing the certificate that is provided. This will speed up your process. If you reside in Ontario, you can click on this link to get your QR code in under 5 minutes: https://covid-19.ontario.ca/get-proof/

4. DETERMINE WHETHER YOU NEED AN ANTIGEN OR PCR TEST
Each country has different requirements, so be sure to check in both directions. For example, when travelling to the US from Canada, only an antigen test is currently required. However, returning to Canada from the US currently requires a PCR test less than 48 hours before entering the country. When travelling province-to-province, no PCR or antigen test is required, however Proof of Vaccination is mandatory.
We use this very helpful tool for checking what the ongoing requirements are when travelling to and from countries internationally: https://apply.joinsherpa.com/map
5. BONUS TIP: PACK EXTRA MASKS AND HAND SANITIZER
The last thing you want is to be searching high and low for new masks in the event that you misplace the one you have. Always be prepared as different countries have different accessibility to proper PPE and sanitization products. We recommend using hand sanitizers with at least 70% alcohol.
